Gulaabi’ or Pink is often seen as a colour of ‘femininity’ or ‘softness’. However, a group of women have put a new adjective to the colour; ‘power’. Gulaab gang is a group of women clad in pink saris residing in the North of India. They are known for protecting women against their abusers. The pink colour is iconic to the group because apart from the feminity that is usually associated with the colour the women want to show the spirit of power as well, all this while wearing a sari. The story of the sari spans back millennia, however even till this day it is a 5 - 10-yard piece of fabric wrapped and draped around the body with intricacy. The most common sari drape is 6 yards long. I have adopted this measurement into my garments making sure each look in totality is 6 yards worth of fabric. The Sari, more than a garment is symbolic; it symbolises the graciousness and gentleness of the female yet at the same time women can self defend themselves in this fabric or even practice yoga in it.
The sari, however traditional is constantly contemporized to meet the current trend.
